Michael Reddell Housing Much of the media coverage of the housing market in recent months has been on prices having levelled off, or even fallen back a bit in some places. I noticed a Canadian article just the other day highlighting that in Vancouver house prices are already back up to the levels they were before the substantial tax on non-resident foreign buyers was imposed. The big trends in house prices are mostly about land use restrictions. Neither in Vancouver nor in New Zealand have those restrictions been materially liberalised in ways that might foreshadow a significant structural fall in house prices. And with the leaders of both our major political parties unwilling to suggest that lower house prices would be a good thing, it is difficult to be optimistic that that situation will change here, no matter which group of parties finally gets to form a government. The situation in Auckland is, of course, far more serious than in the rest of the country. Million dollar houses are two a penny there. But the other day, I heard of a house sale in my own suburb, Island Bay, that left me pretty gobsmacked about the extent of the unjust redistributions of wealth that central and local governments have continued to enable and exact.

After the war, small boat cruising exploded in popularity — and so did the Seagull. In its heyday of the s, British Seagull was selling over 80, motors a year — small, affordable, bullet-proof outboards barely changed since before the war, for pushing the tender, dinghy or the pocket cruiser along at a few knots when the wind dropped. The company even had its own foundries for the production of components.
The Seagull has become one of the few engines ever to achieve cult status, the nautical counterpart of the motor that powered Vespas, another one-cylinder two-stroke petrol engine designed to mobilise working Italy. John Williams is a man who has devoted his life to saving old Seagulls. Following the Blackwater River to meet him in his corner of rural Essex, I began to form a picture of him: John Williams As we sat in his kitchen and John, in his British Seagull sweater, talked about his beloved engines, it became clear that John is a more modern sort of creature.
He talked optimistically about the possibility of siting wind-generators in his part of Essex and about how he has learned to run his own website since the death of his close friend who built it. John is the king of not one, but two garden sheds, one housing Seagulls in various stages of refurbishment, and the other stacked to the ceiling with spares. This is where the Gulls come to roost.
I had a Mirror and wanted an outboard.

If you find another one just let us know and we will include it it the list. Just send an email to Charles britishseagullshop. Andrew hails from Sidney Australia and includes a write up of a vessel he constructed equipped with a british seagull engine. Excellent pictures and pretty funny comments! Since the race has been held on a 42 mile course around the islands.

The Villiers Engineering Co. His son Charles then had to deal with the problem of paying death duties on the estate, that tax having been recently introduced. He also wanted to deal with the fact that he had many interests outside industry. He therefore sold off Sunbeam to a group of munitions makers who had done well out of the war and wanted somewhere to put their patriotic gains. Charles kept Villiers Engineering but, in or about , he left the active day to day management of the company.
Charles took as active an interest in the affairs of the firm as his other interests allowed. Indeed he was involved in Villiers’ attempt to produce a car in He carefully examined Cadillac, Ford, Chrysler and Piece Arrow, apparently thinking that there would be a market for a high quality, medium sized car produced on modern production line. Villiers employed Leslie Farrer, Frank’s nephew, who had been with Austin, to develop the idea.

With apologies for the poor quality, we have reproduced this list directly from the original manuals. As this is an important source of information we hope you find it useful. As an added feature I have retyped a table supplied by Ian Talmage, based on the original info, I hope it might be easier to read and maybe have extra info available. When I am satisfied all my gremlins are out of it and I have added as much as I can, I might delete the first one, but at the moment I leave both, as the first one came direct from the horses mouth, so to speak, British Seagull.
Scan right down to the bottom of the page for the latest edition. I think these tables are about as correct as I can get them, I will remove the originals at some time, when I’m sure!

Identification Information Serial Numbers to Early models, manufactured from to , used a letter code and production number to denote the model and year of manufacture. Use the tables below to identify your outboard model and the date range it was manufactured. For production number and year manufactured information, click on the ‘Year’ link in the tables.
Serial Numbers to From on a letter code, production number and ending letter s and number code were used in the serial number to denote the model, production number and month and year of manufacture. The letter indicates the month and the number the year of manufacture, i. From two letters were used in the code to indicate the month, i. Therefore identification of a model and date of manufacture can be found as follows: From to a single letter was used again in the code to indicated the month manufactured and from to two letters were used, however, this is not necessarily accurate.

Fairly early on in the relationship it needed a new engine, the inboard being beyond redemption. Seagull 40 standard shaft model … and the same engine cut away to show the gearbox and cylinder head. Well I certainly aspired towards heaps of pleasure, especially at that age, but I needed a few hints on the way there, maybe a fault-finding chart that led you through options such as dirty fuel, blown gaskets or blocked back passages.
But the chaps who ran British Seagull simply advised a thorough check of the spark plug and then: But will people do this? We have no sympathy with these people at all… Strong words, but of limited value for an engine long past its best. In my case, it gradually dawned that water was supposed to come out of the hole in the cylinder head; some hours later I found the cooling jacket was blocked solid with cooked oil, salt and rust. But after a few decades in the open, sediment in the fuel tank plus wear and tear, most engines would need more than a new plug.
In the beginning… British Seagulls were first built in the s and soon settled into a design that remained fundamentally unchanged for another 50 years. There were two engine blocks: The range of horsepower from just two blocks was due to different carburettor sizes, gear ratios and propeller diameters. In the early 90s the company gave the engines a complete makeover with recoil starters, CD ignition systems and cowlings.
Nevertheless, the basic, no-frills Seagulls have always had the advantage of being easy to repair and — for old engines — relatively reliable.

During every summer trip to Blue Hill, we stopped at Wiscasset on the way there and back. In an earlier blog, I mentioned the old wooden schooners lying derelict there. One could almost hear them rotting away.
